I adore all things culinary and viticulure related, the seasonal aspect of wine-making, the social aspect of the tasting room, release parties and collaborative dinners, as well as the the physicality of crush, a cellar, and a final elixir. As a photographer, each offers subject matter I relish.
I’ve been commissioned to photograph in Northern California and the Central Coast for wineries like Preston Farm and Winery in Healdsburg, Scribe Winery in Sonoma, and Presqu’ile Winery in Santa Maria. I often spend a few days at a winery, making broad-ranging photographs which tell stories of the people and places behind wineries, as well as the process of wine-making itself.
Because my photographic style is editorial, warm, naturalistic and rustic, it is a good fit for such clients who want socially inviting, storytelling images to lure in new customers, excite the existing ones, or simply to help solidify their brand.
I find a broad range of photographic possibilities inherent in wineries: shooting the vineyards across the seasons, approaching crush with a documentary eye, and relishing in the fascinating details within the science of viticulture. I use my event-photography background to capture the social aspects of a tasting room, a farm party, or a culinary collaboration with a chef, and my background working with artists allows me to thoughtfully convey winemakers and farmers in classic environmental portraiture using natural light.
Working with a winery begins with a conversation about what makes each winery unique, what is that winery’s story, and how images might assist in evoking it. Then we move on, discussing how to make a shoot most fruitful, create a schedule, often across one to two days, for a range of light and scenarios. Images are then available for wineries to use in their branding, social media, mailings and more.
